  • A court that is convened to handle and decide civil and criminal matters concerning parents, spouses, and juveniles according to family law. Family courts may decide matters such as custody of children, the dissolution of marriage, visitation, child support, paternity, juvenile delinquency, and the issuance of orders of protection in domestic violence cases. Family court hearings are heard and decided by judges or magistrates; there are no juries in family court. In family court proceedings, children may be appointed a representative, such as a law guardian, to serve in the child's interests.
