Alternative Assessments
Nontraditional forms of assessment (usually in an educational context) generally contrasted with standardized multiple-choice tests. Alternative assessments can sometimes take the form of performance assessments, in which the test taker is asked to construct a product or demonstrate a process. For example, in an entrepreneurship course, rather than having students complete a multiple-choice test on definitions, an alternative assessment might require students to develop, market, and sell a product or service, with scores derived using a rubric addressing the main objectives of the assessment. Other types of alternative assessments may include portfolios, oral presentations, journals, or exhibits.
