  • The process of transforming information from one format to another. Decoding is the opposite of encoding. In cognition, encoding is a basic perceptual process of interpreting incoming stimuli. Technically speaking, it is a complex, multistage process of converting relatively objective sensory input, such as light and sound, into a subjectively meaningful experience.

    Character encoding is a code that pairs a set of natural language characters. This includes the use of an alphabet with a set of something else, such as numbers. This can also include electrical impulses.
