  • In the field of public administration, a permanent federal, state, or local government organization that provides administration of discrete functions. It is an administrative division of the government, usually established though legislation or executive orders at the federal, state, or local level. Some agencies are referred to as “independent agencies,” as they operate outside of the direct control of the executive branch. Others operate directly under the supervision of a cabinet-level position or executive-branch department. Oversight and judicial review of agencies at the federal level is usually provided through congressional statutes.
