  • The targeting of particular persons or groups based solely on their possession of a distinct characteristic. Such prejudice may be predicated on race, religion, gender, age, disabilities, or a number of other individual features. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits workplace discrimination predicated on “race, religion, sex, color, or national origin.” Federally funded programs are explicitly barred from discrimination based on these individual faculties, perhaps most prominently in the realm of housing or other assistance programs. In the domain of criminal justice, racial profiling has especially proven a point of contention, and the police have been subsequently sued or reprimanded for encouraging supposedly discriminatory policies.
