  • An anthropological and sociological term that refers to the dispersal of social practices and cultural traits from one group to another. This conceptualization of diffusion first appeared in Primitive Culture in 1871. Diffusion accounts for the presence of traditions and customs beyond their society of origin. Such practices include language, technologies, beliefs, and rituals. For more information, see Tylor (1871/1974).
