  • A statistical analysis procedure that scrutinizes the degree of difference in the fairness of a test item (a single question on a test). Differential item analysis references the fairness of a test item in relation to the racial, ethnic, and gendered profile of the persons taking the test. The level of knowledge and ability is assumed to be similar throughout the sample but not a factor in this particular analysis. The question this analysis answers is as follows: To what degree was the test item structured so that persons with different racial, ethnic, and gendered profiles would submit the same or a similar response?
