  • A prison or a jail term for a fixed amount of time. An offender with a determinate sentence must serve the complete sentence before being eligible for release. With the emergence of prisons, sentences were determinate. Indeterminate sentencing became the fashion toward the end of the 19th century, with a resurgence of determinate sentencing at the end of the 20th century.
