  • Stores and copies genetic material in living organisms. DNA, as it is commonly known, consists of two spiraling and repeating units of nucleotides joined together by chemical bonds. DNA's physical construction, a double-helix, is an image that has become widely familiar. Francis Crick and James Watson are credited with discovering DNA in 1953. In 1962, they were awarded the Nobel Prize for what is consistently identified as one of the most important scientific discoveries of the 20th century. DNA accounts for how organisms are constructed and explains heredity.
