  • A transparent, curved membrane that covers the iris and the pupil. The cornea acts like a “window” because the outside light rays first pass through it. Together with the lens, the cornea merges the outside light, helping the eye to focus, though it also contributes significantly to refraction. While the curvature of the lens can be adjusted depending on the distance of the object, the curvature of the cornea is fixed. Lesions within the shape of the cornea cause astigmatism, an optical defect that causes selective blurring of the image.
