  • An element of the ethical concept of the right to privacy. Confidentiality refers to the researcher acquiring information from research participants but ensuring that the participants' identities cannot be known by anyone other than the researcher. Anonymity is a stronger condition, in which data are collected and stored in a way that participants' identities are never known, even to the researcher.
