  • A person who sexually abuses a minor, typically under 18 years of age. Some child molesters suffer from a disorder known as pedophilia, which is a sexual attraction to prepubescent children. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (fourth edition; DSM-IV) requires that such offenders be at least 16 years old and engage in sexual contact with a child 5 years younger. In cases of incest (sexual relations between family members), the offender is most often attracted to a child at the beginning of adolescence, during the start of physical maturation.
