  • A hierarchal structure of order and discipline used in militaristic and paramilitaristic agencies. Orders are disseminated from the top to the bottom. Traditionally, lower-ranking officers must report and can only receive orders from the next-higher-ranking officer. Going outside the chain of command is unorthodox and could result in disciplinary action.
