  • A modern-day ideology denoting a moderate, middle-of-the road political position between the extremes of the left and the right. A centrist believes that, in this changing world, the Left and Right movements have become archaic and are no longer functional. The centrist's views are neither left nor right and hold an ideology between these positions. The term most likely originates from the time of the French revolution of 1789, when the moderates were seated in the center of the Convention, between the radicals on the left and the royalists and conservatives on the right.
