  • An eating disorder characterized by eating massive amounts of food and then expelling the food through self-induced vomiting and/or the use of strong laxatives. Such “binge-purge” episodes may occur as often as twice a day. Like individuals with anorexia nervosa, individuals with bulimia nervosa are focused on being slender and are, typically, female. Although bulimia is generally not life threatening, the consequences can be extremely severe and result in long-term health problems, including dehydration, nutritional problems, dental problems (from the acids associated with vomiting), and intestinal damage. The preoccupation with eating and avoiding weight gain also makes it difficult to lead a productive life. The preva lence of bulimia ranges between 1% and 3% of adoles cent and college-age women.
