  • An individual who was present but was not involved in the perpetration of an act or event. In the context of the criminal justice system, witnesses are called on to help build a case in order to establish the guilt or innocence of the defendant. An individual who has witnessed a crime may be subpoenaed (summoned to court to testify). Credible witness testimony is often considered to be one of the stronger forms of evidence.
