  • A police chief from California who played a key role in the development of the fields of law enforcement and criminal justice in the early 20th century. He founded the Berkeley Police School in 1908 and was responsible for various innovative developments in the area of policing. His numerous contributions to law enforcement include setting up the first scientific crime lab, developing a fingerprinting program, and emphasizing the importance of crime prevention efforts. Vollmer was one of the 11 members appointed to the Wickersham Commission.
