  • A French expression. The original meaning of the expression made reference to an oath to tell the truth. In the contemporary context, voir dire refers to the process by which individuals are examined and questioned by the judge and legal teams for selection as members of a jury. During the voir dire process, attorneys may dismiss potential jurors “for cause” or through a limited number of peremptory challenges (with no explanation for the dismissal, though the dismissal cannot be based on race, gender, or other discriminatory criteria).
