  • A major discipline of geography, the term refers to the study of the earth's physical features. More specifically, topography focuses on the features found on the earth's surface. Commonly studied features in this discipline include mountains, valleys, and rivers. However, topography is not limited to the study of naturally occurring features. The discipline also includes the study of man-made features, such as bridges and roadways. Topographers are concerned with the precise description of surface features, which includes the size, shape, and position of the feature under examination.
