  • The minimum amount of a stimulus needed for it to be detected. For example, researchers may record varying levels of a sound to detect the conditions under which that sound can be detected. Sensory thresholds differ among individuals and can also differ within the same person depending on his or her physiological state. The smallest magnitude of a stimulus that can be detected is called the absolute threshold, and the smallest magnitude of difference in a stimulus is known as the difference threshold.
