  • A group of people who not only have many of the traditions, rituals, values, and norms (i.e., culture) of the larger group but also have unique values and norms that differentiate them from this larger group. Ethnic groups, each with their own histories, have their own subcultures. Other subcultures can be based on factors ranging from sexuality to career type and from musical interest to favorite TV show. There are a number of subcultures that are considered deviant, including gangs, drug users, and people with numerous tattoos. Criminal subcultures may include people involved in white-collar crime, organized crime, or street crime.
