  • Drugs inducing excitement and awareness by increasing the activation of the nervous system. Also referred to as “uppers” or amphetamines, stimulants are used to alleviate fatigue and increase alertness. The opposite of sedatives, stimulants range from legal, mild stimulants, such as caffeine and nicotine, as found in soft drinks and tobacco, to stronger, illegal stimulants, such as cocaine, crack, and ice. Stimulants result in increased blood pressure and heart rate and reduced anxiety and appetite. The side effects of stimulants include increased aggressiveness and panic.
