Stanine (Psychology)
Scores calibrated to a 9-point, normalized, standard scale, with a fixed mean of 5 and standard deviations of 2. Each stanine is based on the following percentage of scores in ascending order: 4% equals first stanine, 7% equals second stanine, 12% equals third stanine, 17% equals fourth stanine, 20% equals fifth stanine, 17% equals sixth stanine, 12% equals seventh stanine, 7% equals eighth stanine, and 4% equals ninth stanine. The lowest three stanines can be considered as below average, the middle three as average, and the highest three as above average. Although they represent an intuitive scale, stanines are less useful than percentiles.
