  • An individual's score derived from the distance of the person's score to the mean, based on the standard deviation of the distribution. Standard scores are established via either linear or nonlinear transformations of the individual's raw scores. Scores that are linearly derived are frequently referred to as standard scores, or z scores. Scores need to be nonlinearly derived when a distribution curve is not shaped normally, and they may be skewed.
