  • A theory of growth and development characterized by discrete stages (levels). Stage theory is associated with the idea that physical and psychological development occurs in stages over sequential periods of time. The essential concept is that each stage of development is characterized by specific and identifiable behaviors. Stage theory also holds that each stage of development is requisite to the next.
