Soma
The bulbous-shaped part of the neuron that encompasses the cell nucleus, as well as the chemical environment common in most cells. As neurons range in specialization, the soma (or cell body) can range in size from approximately 5 micrometers to more than 1 millimeter in invertebrates. Attached to the soma is the axon, which is responsible for transmission of information from the soma to the synapses at the axon terminal, to be received by other neurons, muscles, or glands.
