  • Piaget's first stage of child development, occurring from birth to 2 years of age. During the sensorimotor stage, children explore and learn about the world via their congenital senses rather than mental operations. This stage is responsible for the development of spatial abilities in the child. The milestone of the sensorimotor stage is the development of symbolic thought, which is exemplified in the concept of object permanence. For more information, see Piaget (1954).
