Sanction (Sociology)
A form of punishment. In civil law, this is usually a monetary fine against a party in a legal action for violating the rules of procedure or otherwise exploiting the judicial process. A judge who sanctions a party during a legal procedure has imposed a penalty. In the criminal justice system, a sanction is a punishment imposed by the judge and can include anything from fines to incapacitation within the community to incarceration.
