  • A therapeutic technique used in counseling that enables the client to rehearse a desired behavior by creating and performing a role. The simulation of the experience should closely mimic an experience similar to what is likely to occur in the client's life. Constructive feedback from the counselor can encourage the client to recognize both strengths and challenges in practicing the new skill. It is sometimes paired with imagery, wherein first a client imagines using a new adaptive coping strategy in a problem situation and then follows it with the imagery of acting out the new approach.
