  • Conflicting explanations of the same phenomenon. Researchers often design their projects to decide between rival hypotheses. For example, one hypothesis to explain the relation between income and the death rate is that people with higher incomes have better access to medical care; another is that people with lower incomes live and work in less healthy environments.
