  • An area of the world, either land or water, that shares characteristics distinguishing it from other parts of the earth. While a region provides boundaries, there are different theories about the defining traits of a region. Regions are constructs and therefore can be classified by natural characteristics or social charac teristics, such as economy and culture. A natural region is one that is distinguished by similar natural physical features, such as mountainous terrain or heavy forestry. Other regions are delineated by socially constructed norms. Some of these regions are functional, otherwise known as nodal regions, as they are tied together by a common purpose, such as transportation or communi cation.
