  • Communi cation with the public in general, not for a limited, specific audience. Public communication, in contrast to private, interpersonal communication, is usually carried out on behalf of an agency or organization. It includes political communication systems between and among people, mass media, and political institutions.

    In the journalistic model of public relations, information is provided to the press and to the public as a one-way flow. In the context of public relations, public communication departs from the traditional journalistic model by approaching communication between an organization and the public as an interactive two-way flow, fostering relationship development. Negative associations with the term public relations include paternalism, deception, and manipulation; the term public communication has not earned such lack of respect.
