  • The term Sigmund Freud coined to describe his theory of psychological develop ment and psychotherapy. Psychoanalysis views uncon scious conflicts, particularly those linked to the sexual drive, as central to understanding psychopathology. Therapy is lengthy and involves the analyst eliciting and interpreting the client's free associations, dreams, and transference reactions to bring the unconscious conflicts into consciousness.
