  • A legal representative who is responsible for prosecuting cases on behalf of a government or the people. Also called a district attorney in most jurisdictions, the prosecutor's role is to present a case that will demonstrate that a given defendant is guilty of the charges brought against him or her. Prosecutors have legal training and act as representatives of the govern ment at the local, state, and federal levels. At the local level, the prosecutor generally represents the county or city, while he or she represents the state and federal governments at the latter two levels.
