  • A sentence to be served in the community under the supervision of a probation officer. Probation is the centerpiece of community corrections and accounts for the largest number of offenders under correctional supervision. The Department of Probation, which is typically housed within the court, has the dual role of investigation and supervision. The investigative role involves the preparation of presentence investigation reports for the court, while the supervisory role involves the active monitoring of offenders sentenced to probation. Offenders sentenced to probation serve their sentences in the community and are required to abide by a variety of conditions. Standard, treatment, punitive, and special conditions allow the probation sentence to be tailored to the needs of the offender.
