A report typically written by the Department of Probation and used by a judge in sentencing. A presentence investigation report is a concise but detailed offense summary that describes the nature and circumstances of the offense, the background and current status of the offender, and the impact of the offense on the victim and the community, and it often includes a sentence recommendation. Presentence investigation reports are seen as essential to the sentencing process because few cases ever go to trial and the vast majority of all convictions are secured through guilty pleas or plea bargains.
