  • A legal principle or rule established in an earlier case. To the extent possible, courts adhere to the principle of stare decisis, Latin for “stand by what is decided.” When presented with a case with facts similar to already decided cases, courts rely on the precedents set in those earlier cases in rendering the current decision.
