  • Chemicals secreted by animals that transmit signals, usually to animals of the same species. There are alarm pheromones, food trail pheromones, sex pheromones, and many others that affect behavior or physiology. Ants, bees, and other insects secrete chemi cals that attract mates and “release” other behaviors. Some studies have suggested the possibility of the occurrence of pheromones in humans. For example, people might be using odor cues associated with the immune system to select mates who are not closely related to themselves. For more information, see Wyatt (2003).
