  • The act of hearing without making comments or showing reactions while another person speaks. The listener's lack of comment or reaction may be a conscious or unconscious choice.

    Passive listening is the opposite of active listening, in that the one who is hearing is not interested in comprehending the underlying messages beneath the content of the words voiced, is not evaluating the speaker fairly, and is not reconsidering previously held attitudes. Passive listening also is the opposite of empathetic listening in that the active hearer is not responding to the sentiments or underlying messages voiced by the speaker and is not expressing a perception of what the speaker is saying.
