  • The act of forgiving an individual for having committed a crime, usually granted by the government or some other sovereign power. An individual is eligible for a pardon when he or she is deemed to have repaid his debt to society. The pardon implies that the individual is no longer under the obligation to reveal (e.g., to potential employers) that he or she has been convicted of a crime in the past.
