  • An arrangement of people, technologies, and processes designed to achieve one or more goals. IBM, MTV, Microsoft, the U.S. Army, and the Catholic Church are all formal organizations; so is the local police department, large or small. A formal organization's existence and essential purposes has been determined by some authorized individual, group, or institution. The U.S. Army was established by the Continental Congress in 1775, the Catholic Church grew in service to that religion's adherents, and Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1975.

    An organization also arises spontaneously and informally. Schoolchildren at recess may arrange themselves in hierarchies and self-organize for games, and not always in ways their teachers/monitors want. Employees affiliate at work due to proximity or shared tasks and interests, ...
