  • A child learns that an object continues to exist even after the object can no longer be seen. This developmental milestone was identified by Piaget, who suggested that object permanence in not fully mastered by children until they are 18 months old and occurs during the sensorimotor stage. More recent research by Baillargeon indicated that object permanence may be learned by children as young as three and a half months. For more information, see Piaget (1936) and Baillargeon and DeVos (1991).
