  • Techniques that are developed and used specifically to aid or improve memory. They rely on strategies for placing information in an organized context so as to remember it. Types of mnemonics include acronyms (where the first letters of each of a list of words to be remembered are organized into a single word), acrostics (a verse or saying in which the first letter of each word represents an item to be remembered), visual imagery (where items to be remembered are imagined as being associated in a visual image), and the method of loci (where items to be remembered are imagined in particular physical locations, which the individual then mentally passes in a preplanned order). For further reading, see Cook (1989).
