Metaphysics
The study of what is ultimately real— that is, of the structure and constitution of reality. Since it investigates the possible existence and nature of entities, such as God, causation, natural laws, and abstracta (e.g., numbers or propositions), metaphysics is broader in scope than empirical science, theology, or cosmology. In some applications, metaphysics is synonymous with ontology.
