  • The process of hiring or promoting candidates for employment positions based on credentials and/or quality of work performance. The merit of a potential candidate can be determined by examining the prior job experience, educational qualifications, employment testing, and/or job performance. It can also be used to describe the screening process used by educational institutions to admit students into their program. This process is viewed as being more efficient and ethical than the alternatives, in which individuals are hired or promoted based on loyalty, political affiliation, or nepotism. The rationale behind this system is to offer the greatest incentive for current employees seeking promotion and other potential employees to improve their productivity.
