  • There are eight different media industries: (1) book publishing, (2) newspapers, (3) magazines, (4) recordings, (5) radio, (6) movies, (7) television, and (8) the Internet. Book publishing is the oldest business, with the first American book having been published in 1640. The Internet is the newest media industry. These industries are almost entirely privately owned (National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service are two exceptions) and are motivated by profit. Except in the cases of book publishing, recordings, and movies, in which the bulk of the profits are made from sales to consumers, the greatest profits are derived from sponsors. As the purpose of mass media is to inform as well as entertain, this can sometimes result in conflicts of interest.
