  • A criminal homicide (or killing of a human being) where the level of culpability (or blameworthiness) is less than it would be in a murder. Voluntary manslaughter is an intentional killing that lacks the malice aforethought traditionally associated with murder. Those who kill in the heat of passion or following provocation are often charged with volun tary manslaughter instead of murder. Involuntary manslaughter is sometimes referred to as criminally negligent homicide and results when a person dies as a result of a defendant's reckless conduct. A person who is convicted of involuntary manslaughter has, typically, willfully disregarded a known risk.
