Law Enforcement
The enforcement of the laws of a local, state, tribal, or federal justice agency to prevent or investigate crime and apprehend and detain individuals suspected or convicted of criminal offenses. Law enforcement agents, such as police officers, are empowered to use force in order to enforce the law and assist the governance of a society. Police functions may include the protection of citizens' life and property, the enforcement of criminal law, and criminal investigation, though specialized police units exist specifically for functions such as traffic regulation, homicide, explosive disposal, and crowd control.
