  • The unlawful taking and carrying away of another person's tangible property without permission to permanently deprive the rightful owner of it. Some states differentiate between petty larceny (usually classed as a misdemeanor) and grand larceny (considered a felony) by the property's monetary value. The word derives from the Latin word latrocinium (robbery).
