Justice (Sociology)
A standard or principle of fairness and equity. The legal system is founded on principles of justice, which implies that the law is administered adequately, that all individuals are entitled to fair and equitable treatment from the law, including the right to a fair trial and sentence. Judicial officers are appointed to ensure that the principles of justice are respected.
Punishment based on the principles of justice aims to punish on the basis of blameworthiness and culpability rather than variables that are beyond the control of individuals.
